Gottman Method Couples Therapy is an empirically tested approach to couples counselling. Developed by Drs John and Julie Gottman, the Gottman Method is regarded by many as the benchmark for couples therapy.
Tapping on Gottman Method Couples Therapy, our therapists look to create a fair and non-judgemental counselling space for couples – a safe space in which we can work together through trying issues such as; betrayal, communication breakdown, conflicts, lack of intimacy, and addictive behaviours.
Research by John Gottman highlights that building trust and commitment to improve couples’ relationships requires effort. That we need to extend the work beyond the conflict context into the everyday aspects of interaction, and that healing comes from enhancing and repairing the couple’s friendship and love.
After assessing the areas of strength and challenges in your relationship our therapists will seek to focus on emotions, skills building for managing conflict, enhancing friendship, and helping couples to create a system of shared meaning together.
Parenting can be stressful: how do we determine what and when is right or appropriate – when should we discipline or compliment our child?
In addition to the build-up of our own emotions, we can struggle to find suitable words to say in difficult situations to our children, and to establish consistency of our parenting styles within the family.
Expectations of parents and children are often mismatched, bringing about feelings of guilt and frustration for the parent and feelings of anger, hurt and even shame from children.
We are here to listen and to support you through your parenting concerns. We are also here to create a safe space for your children to voice their issues.
We work systemically with the family, we come up with strategies to work through challenges faced, encourage one another, and help build stronger confidence between you and your children by creating opportunities to strengthen your connections.
Unfortunately marriages or partnerships do sometimes end in separation or divorce.
Whether you are looking for support during a trial separation or through the process of divorce, our counsellors can offer emotional support and help you develop insights and skills needed to better understand and respond to the sometimes overwhelming thoughts and feelings that you may be experiencing.
For ex partners who are very adversarial, the focus of counselling may be on providing clients with stress and anxiety management skills to better cope with the challenging process of divorce, how to best parent children through the process, and to provide access to additional resources as appropriate.
For those who are more amicable, the focus of counselling might be how to communicate effectively with your ex partner, to co-parent effectively and to build a new relationship post separation.
Your counsellor will work with you to understand your goals and to support you at this difficult time.
Our next counselling group for Women Dealing with Separation or Divorce will be coming soon.
Please check here for details of the new dates as soon as they are announced.
Please email alison@connectcounselling.clinic if you would like to be a participant in our next group.
* The cost of participating in this group will be kept deliberately low at just $45 per week, to address the needs of many women who find themselves in financial difficulty when going through divorce.
At it’s core our approach is person-centered and strengths-driven.
We help our clients identify and focus on their innate abilities and any healthy coping strategies they may have utilised in the past that might be helpful in dealing with difficult thoughts and emotions. We can help you understand the causes and maintaining factors of difficult issues and provide you with new skills and strategies for coping.
