Have you seen your doctor?

Please consult with your doctor if you or your child is experiencing tics for the first time, as tics may be caused by physical/neurological issues that may require medical care.

Where no underlying physical cause is present, anxiety/psychological issues may be linked to ticcing behaviour. Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics (CBIT) has been shown to be beneficial in such cases.

How do we help clients manage their tics?

CBIT is recognised as the gold standard for the treatment of tics and Tourette Syndrome. In studies CBIT has been shown to significantly reduce the frequency and severity of tics.

Over the course of 8-12 sessions tic symptoms can often be effectively reduced and in some cases be put into remission.

What Are Tics?

Tics are sudden, involuntary, jerking, repetitive movements or vocalisations. They can be classified as simple (such as eye blinking alone) or complex (where two or more tics are present, with or without vocalisations). Tics may wax and wane, and even change in nature over time.

Tics may be classified as transient (resolving within one year), or chronic (lasting for more than one year). For a diagnosis of Tourette syndrome tics must be complex, include at least one vocalisation and be present for more than one year, with onset before the age of 18.

Tics may be present from a young age with most common onset around the age of 5-6, or they may appear in adolescence/adulthood. The sudden onset of tics can be distressing both for the person who tics and for their family members.

While most cases of childhood tics resolve by adulthood, where tics are more severe and/or frequent and/or observable to others, they can cause significant distress and disruption to normal functioning.

What does CBIT treatment for tics entail?

Counselling, psychoeducation, and targeted behavioural interventions are provided over the course of 8-12 sessions to help the client learn how to manage and reduce their tic symptoms.

How much does the treatment cost?

  • Session 1-2: 90 minutes, $375 per session
  • Session 3-12: 60 minutes, $250 per session
Sessions are held over the course of 4-6 months.
