Parenthood is universally recognised to be challenging. Across cultures, religions, ethnic groups and over decades of time, parents around the world have recognised that parenthood is life-changing.
Many parents work hard to prepare for parenthood and the birth of their children, however it is only once parenthood begins that the full impact of what it means to be a parent is felt.
For some the early days of having a new-born can be special with care and support from our partners, family and friends as our new baby is celebrated; however for others the enormity of how life has changed can begin from a traumatic birth experience or soon after a baby is born. Whilst it is understood that becoming a parent brings challenges for everyone, for some the struggle can be felt more significantly.
According to the World Health Organisation, worldwide approximately 10% of pregnant women and 13% of women who recently gave birth experience a mental disorder, primarily depression. There is increasing recognition that fathers are also affected by paternal postnatal depression. The British Journal of Mental Health Nursing estimates that on average 8% of new fathers experience paternal postnatal depression.
The effect of postnatal depression can be significant, resulting in parents struggling to function effectively, which can impact on the wellbeing of the entire family. It is for this reason that postnatal support programmes, parenting courses and therapeutic support for parents exists worldwide. This brings hope as these interventions are proven to help parents as they transition into parenthood and navigate the various challenges and stages of being a parent.
We are motivated to support parents who wish to utilise therapeutic support in order to navigate the challenges they are experiencing.
Each person’s experience of parenthood is different, as are their needs and preferences for support. We therefore offer individual and couples counselling services that are flexible and tailored to meet the specific needs of our clients.
We can offer support whether you are looking for help dealing with thoughts and emotions that you are currently experiencing as a parent, with developing healthy coping strategies, or with processing and making sense of unresolved issues from the past. Many parents find that experiences with their children in the present can significantly trigger wounds from the past, when they were children themselves.
Whatever your need may be, we will provide a safe space in which you are able to share difficult thoughts and feelings. You can expect us to listen to your experiences with empathy and work collaboratively with you to develop your goals for therapy. Together we will agree on a plan of support that feels right for you.
We offer individual counselling sessions online or at either of our clinic spaces on Orchard Road and Temple Street.
