What is Sex Therapy Informed

Couples Therapy?

Sex therapy informed couples therapy is an approach that integrates elements of both sex therapy and couples therapy to address sexual issues within a relationship. It recognizes that sexual difficulties often arise within the context of the couple’s dynamic and relational patterns.

The therapist will help the couple explore the emotional, psychological, and relational factors influencing their sexual concerns, taking a holistic approach to address both sexual and relationship problems.

This integrated approach acknowledges that sexual difficulties can stem from a variety of sources, including relationship conflicts, emotional intimacy issues, unresolved resentments or individual psychological factors.

Sex Therapy

Sex therapy focuses specifically on sexual concerns and aims to address problems such as erectile dysfunction, low sexual desire, difficulties with orgasm, or sexual pain. It involves a range of interventions, including psychoeducation, communication training, cognitive restructuring, behavioural exercises, and sometimes the use of specific techniques or devices to enhance sexual functioning.

Couples therapy

Couples therapy, on the other hand, focuses on improving the overall relationship dynamics and communication between partners. It aims to help couples resolve conflicts, enhance intimacy, and develop healthier patterns of interaction. Couples therapists typically work with couples to identify and understand the underlying issues contributing to their relationship difficulties.

What Happens in Therapy sessions?

In sex therapy informed couples therapy, the therapist may employ techniques and strategies from both sex therapy and couples therapy modalities, to help the couple overcome sexual challenges.

The therapist might use communication exercises, intimacy-building activities, and emotional processing techniques to enhance the couple’s connection and address underlying relationship issues. Simultaneously, they may incorporate specific interventions targeting sexual functioning and provide education about sexual health and pleasure.

This integrated approach recognizes that healthy sexual expression is an essential component of a satisfying romantic relationship. By combining sex therapy and couple therapy, the therapist can help couples improve their sexual and emotional connection, fostering a more fulfilling and mutually satisfying partnership.

Therapy sessions typically involve deeper discussion on how communication challenges in the relationship and past experiences in family of origin, culture or tradition could result in distressing conflicts and negatively impact the quality of sexual bonding.

Effective sessions bring insights and behavioural adjustments that will enhance both emotional and physical intimacy. Emotional connection and erotic assignments are also given to strengthen the relationship.
